A special and historic moment is being experienced by the Sacred City of Messolonghi, as well as the entire Holy Metropolis of Aetolia and Acarnania, which welcomed with splendor and honors the Holy and Miraculous Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Axion Estin” from Mount Athos. This is a rare and particularly significant event, filling the faithful throughout Western Greece with spiritual joy.
The revered Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Axion Estin” from Mount Athos was received at the central entrance of the Sacred City of Messolonghi by the local Shepherd, His Eminence Metropolitan of Aetolia and Acarnania, Mr. Damaskinos, along with the clergy, the authorities, and the devout people.
Also present were His Eminence Metropolitan of Chalkis, Mr. Chrysostomos, as a representative of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, as well as Their Eminences the Metropolitans of: Nafpaktos Mr. Ierotheos, Samos Mr. Eusebios, Dimitrias Mr. Ignatios, Piraeus Mr. Seraphim, Patras Mr. Chrysostomos, Messinia Mr. Chrysostomos, Lefkada Mr. Theophilos, Arta Mr. Kallinikos, Ilia Mr. Athanasios, Nea Ionia Mr. Gabriel, Preveza Mr. Chrysostomos, Kalamaria Mr. Ioustinos, Karpenisi Mr. Georgios, Kalavryta Mr. Ieronymos, Kilkis Mr. Bartholomaios, Konitsa Mr. Alexios, Corinth Mr. Pavlos; Their Grace the Bishops of: Kernitsa Mr. Chrysanthos, Acheloos Mr. Niphon, Epidaurus Mr. Nikodimos; representatives of the twenty monasteries of Mount Athos; the Deputy Governor of Mount Athos, Aristos Kasmiroglou; and the couple Athanasios and Marina Martinou.
Following the arrival of the Holy Icon, honors were rendered and a brief prayer service was held.
